Thanks yet again to Helen (at This Thing Called Life One Word At A Time) for this week’s theme of ‘picture/photograph’.

Something For Kate is one of my favourite Australian bands; I felt an immediate connection with them when I first heard their music back in 1999 it must have been! My love at the time was a big SFK fan and I remember driving up to the Falls Festival (held over the New Year) in Lorne listening to the album Beautiful Sharks; I think that was the time we were involved in a very minor car accident but it was enough to be a bit exciting and scary, you know what I mean!

Anyway, this was a super-easy pick for me this week…the only song I considered (although I’m sure there are many other great ones out there too). Being Australian, I kinda want to show-case what we’ve got in the land down-under; we really do have so many outstanding musicians in this country! I’ve seen SFK play many times and they are always fabulous. I especially love the lyrics in their music; intelligent and thoughtfully-written. Dempsey has been quite open with his battles with depression (which seems so common amongst musicians) which is also something that I think is great (the being vocal about it part, not the depression itself!).

So, if you’ve never heard of Something For Kate…please hit play and have a listen to Old Pictures from their 2001 album Echolalia. By the way, the band got their name because Paul Dempsey (lead singer and guitarist) was left a note by his mum that said to get ‘something for Kate’ (their dog at the time). I think that’s a true story!

Lyrics
Let these pages fly away
Flagpoles in the sun
Same Saturday
And reflected off a window is where you’ll stay
Where you’ll stay
I turned you in
I turned you into whispers
I turned you in
I turned you into old pictures
I build you out of nothing to have you near
I remembered you on trains
So now you’re on every train I hear
I turned you in
I turned you into whispers
I turned you in
I turned you into old pictures
I wished that you were gone
So you’re gone
Let these pages fly away
Flagpoles in the sun
Same Saturday
And reflected off a window is where you’ll stay
Where you’ll stay
I turned you in
I turned you into whispers
I turned you in
I turned you into old pictures
