I found this week’s SLS theme of ‘Sleep’ to be much easier than last week’s theme of ‘Glass’ , so thank you Helen! One of my first thoughts was to choose R.E.M.’s song The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite but I picked one of theirs a few weeks ago so decided against it.
So, this week’s song is by the very excellent Australian musician Courtney Barnett entitled An Illustration Of Loneliness (Sleepless In New York) from her 2015 album Sometimes I Sit And Think, Sometimes I Just Sit. This song is about being unable to sleep whilst overseas, in New York I’m assuming, and missing someone back home.
If you’re not familiar with this song, please have a listen! Barnett has a very distinctive style and is wonderful to see live; I’ve been lucky enough to see her a few times!
Counting all the cracks backwards in my best French
Reminds me of a book I skim-read in a surgery
All about palmistry, I wonder what’s in store for me
I pretend the plaster is the skin on my palms
And the cracks are representative of what is going on
I lose a breath, my love-line seems intertwined with death
It’s a kind of off-white, maybe it’s a cream
There’s oily residue zipping from the kitchen
It’s art-deco necromantic chic, all the dinner plates are kitsch with
Irish Wolf Hounds, French baguettes wrapped loose around their necks
I think I’m hungry, I’m thinking of you too
I’m thinking of you too
I’m thinking of you too
I’m thinking of you too
Which quarter of the moon you’re viewing from your bedroom
Watching all the movies, drinking all the smoothies
Swimming at the pool, I’m thinking of you too
I’m thinking of you too
I’m thinking of you too
I’m thinking of you too
I’m thinking of you too
I’m thinking of you too
I’m thinking of you too
I’m thinking of you too
I’m thinking of you too
I’m thinking of you too
I’m thinking of you too
I’m thinking of you
Thank you Simone, I’m having A feast of sleep music tonight, I’ve now 3 of my readers doing Song Lyric Sunday, and I should have no trouble sleeping tonight.

I really enjoyed the funk in this song. My hubby has problems sleeping and I can only imagine that he can relate to these lyrics. Thanks so much for the introduction!

Can relate to this one a bit although when I can’t sleep (which is often), I HAVE to get up. I figure if I’m awake…might as well DO something! LOL! Nice share!

This is a new-to-me song, but I kind of like it! Thank you for the introduction. I’m going to search more of her music and check her out some more.

Well that makes sense! That’s what they say, best to get up and do something instead of lie in bed awake! =)

A great place to hang out. Did you go to the New Orleans jazz music day on the street, he ran earlier in the year, that a top day. 😊
